Tracking Email Sends and Opens with Google Analytics

Users can now quickly set up a google analytics integration to track their email sends and opens. If enabled, all emails sent from Fountain will automatically contain a tracking pixel.

Step-by-step instructions

Setting Up Google Analytics

  1. Create a free google analytics account or Sign in using your existing google credentials
  2. Create a new property
    1. Click on the cog wheel
    2. Select ‘Create new property’
    3. Enter in your website name and URL (can be your company website and URL)
    4. Get Tracking ID
    5. Your tracking ID will be in the format UA-XXXXX-Y. You can use the same tracking ID across all openings OR set up different tracking IDs for different openings. We’ll show you how in the next step.


  1. Login to Fountain and go to Integrations (can be found in the dropdown under the username)
  2. Select Screening
  3. Click Connect under Email Analytics - Google Analytics
  4. Enter in your google analytics tracking ID and the openings you want to connect to. You can set up multiple tracking IDs for different openings here.
    *Note that while one tracking ID may be used for multiple opening, each opening can only be connected to one tracking ID.


You can track email sends and opens as events in google analytics. For every email, we record the following information under the corresponding google analytics dimensions.

In google analytics, you can track email sends and opens in Real Time or over a specific date range.


To track in real time, go to Home > Reports > Real Time > Events

  • You can see currently active users and events that occured in the last 30 minutes.


To track over a specific date range, go to Home > Reports > Behavior > Events > Top Events

  • You can select the date range on the upper right
  • You can segment data by primary and secondary dimensions
  • You can pivot the data based on primary and secondary dimensions
