Attributes are flexible labels that you can assign to individual workers. They can make filtering and segment creation easy to set up and maintain.
Create New Attributes from Settings
To set up a new worker attribute, follow these steps:
Click your company logo in the left side panel and then Settings.
Click the Worker Attributes settings link.
Click the Add Attribute button in the top right corner .
In the Add Attribute pop-up that appears, fill out the following fields:
Attribute Label: The label of your attribute that will be shown when you add it to a worker's profile and give it a value (ex. 'Date of Birth' or 'Years of Experience')
Attribute Type: This dictates what kind of values you can enter in the attribute, when adding it to a worker:
String (plain text): Free-text values
Number: Numerical values
Date: A specific date (month, day, and year)
Boolean: True or False
Select: choose from a list of options
Address: enter a business or residential address
Media: upload a file or document
Signature: tied to Document Signature templates
Compliance Document: tied to a compliance check document
Optionally, select the Protect attribute checkbox if you would like for the value of this attribute to be hidden by default in the worker's profile
Click Add to save your new attribute
This new attribute will be added to the Worker Attributes table, which lists all attributes available for your company.
Editing an Existing Attribute
Once an attribute has been created, you can take three actions on it from the More Actions button:
Edit: edit the label of an attribute, and if it's a protected value (note: you can't change the type of attribute after it's been created)
Delete: deletes the attribute entirely, including from worker profiles
Manage Webhooks: configure a webhook to be triggered on any custom attribute. The webhook URL that is configured here will be triggered when the value of this attribute changes for any worker.
Create an Attribute from a Worker Profile
These same steps can also be taken from directly within a worker profile. This does two things at once: creates a new attribute, and adds it directly to the selected worker's profile for you to add in a value. To do so:
Go to the Workers page
Select any worker from the table by clicking on their name
In the window that opens, click the Add Attribute button in the top right
Fill out the Attribute Label and Attribute Type fields
Optionally select the protect attribute checkbox if you want values for this attribute to be hidden by default
Click Add to create your new attribute and add it to this worker's profile at the same time
To add a value for an attribute, click the Edit button (pencil icon) next to the attribute in the worker's profile.
View a Worker's Attributes
You can view a specific Worker's attributes via their Worker Profile. To do so:
Go to the Workers page
Select any worker from the table by clicking on their name
The Attributes tab will appear on the right side
Toggle on the Hide empty checkbox to hide any attributes that don't contain data from a particular worker.
Group Attributes into Sections
When your company has dozens or hundreds of worker attributes, the Attributes tab on a worker profile becomes one long list. Sections let you group related attributes — everything about driving, everything about compliance — so a profile can be scanned instead of read.
Sections are optional and set up once for your whole company. Until you create your first section, nothing changes: worker profiles keep showing the same flat list they show today.
Set up sections
Click your company logo in the left side panel and then Settings.
Click the Worker Attributes settings link.
Click Manage sections in the top right corner.
Click New section, type a name, then click Add section (or press Enter).
Repeat for each group you want, then click Done.
In a hurry? Click Add starter set to create a suggested set of sections drawn from common Fountain setups — compliance, driving, and scheduling. Rename, reorder, or delete any of them afterwards.
Back in the attributes table, every attribute row now has a Section dropdown. Pick a section to assign the attribute, or pick No section to unassign it. The change saves immediately.
With a long list of attributes, use the Search box above the table to find the ones you want before assigning them.
Attributes marked Read-only — the ones synced in from Hire — cannot be assigned to a section. They show a dash in the Section column and always appear in the Other group on the worker profile.
Order, collapse, rename, and delete
Click Manage sections again to change any of them. Each row is one section:
Drag the handle on the left to change the order sections appear in on the worker profile.
Tick Collapse to have that section start closed on every worker profile. Leave it clear and the section starts open.
Click the pencil to rename the section, or the bin to delete it.
Deleting a section never deletes attributes or the values stored against them. Fountain confirms this before you delete: the attributes in that section move back to the unassigned group, and you can reassign them to another section at any time.
Two greyed-out groups, Applicant Attributes and Hidden, sit at the bottom of the dialog. Fountain manages these, so they cannot be renamed, reordered, or deleted.
If a section name is refused, one of these messages appears:
Message | What to do |
Enter a section name | The name field was left empty. Type a name and try again. |
A section with this name already exists. Enter a different name. | Another section already uses that exact name. Note that the check is case-sensitive, so Driving and driving would both be accepted — give sections clearly different names to avoid confusing your team. |
What you see on the worker profile
Go to the Workers page, click a worker, and select the Attributes tab:
Sections appear as collapsible cards, in the order you set. Click a section header to open or close it.
Attributes you have not assigned appear last, in a group called Other.
The number beside a section name counts the attributes currently shown in that section.
A section with nothing to show for this worker is left out entirely, so profiles are not padded with empty headers.
Hide empty behaves as it always has. With it ticked, attributes with no value are hidden, and any section left with nothing to show disappears along with them. Untick it to see every attribute in every section.
