Job Switcher Stage

Learn how to configure and use the Job Switcher stage to transition applicants to alternative active openings without losing their progress.

Job Switcher helps applicants move from one Opening to another eligible Opening without losing their completed application progress.

This is useful when an applicant is applying to an Opening that becomes inactive or is no longer accepting applicants. Instead of ending the application, Job Switcher lets the applicant choose another active Opening that uses the same workflow.

Benefits of Job Switcher

Job Switcher can help you:

  • Keep qualified applicants in the funnel

  • Reduce drop-off when Openings are filled

  • Preserve applicant progress across Openings

  • Route applicants without Rule stages or additional questions

  • Reduce advertising spend by consolidating traffic across fewer listings

Opening Eligibility

Applicants can switch only to Openings that:

  • Are active

  • Use the same workflow

  • Have not met their Hiring Goal

  • Match the configured conditions, such as workflow, location, location group, or position

To add the Job Switcher stage, follow the steps below:

  1. Access the Workflow Editor for the hiring Opening you want to add the stage to.

  2. Click Add Stage in the top left corner.

  3. Type a name for the stage, then select Job Switcher as the stage type in the dropdown. Place this stage at a point in the hiring process where the applicant has made significant progress but a hiring decision has not yet been made.

  4. In the Select openings to show section, in the Value box, review the Openings. These Openings have the same workflow as the Opening you are adding the Job Switcher stage to. Please note that Openings that have the same workflow will be automatically selected in the Value box. Your applicants will be routed to these additional Openings based on the criteria that you set.

  5. Click + Add Conditions to add additional conditions for things like position, location, or location group.

  6. To show applicants Openings within a specific radius of the applicant’s zip code, click the toggle under Advanced Options to on. Then choose either 25, 50, or 100 miles in the dropdown. Please note, in order to use the radius functionality, you must ask for the applicant’s zip code by adding the zip code Standard Question on the Application form or a Data Collection stage before the Job Switcher stage.

  7. If you need to delete a condition, click the trashcan icon to the right of the condition. You cannot delete the workflow Condition and Value for a Switcher stage.

  8. When done, click Save Changes in the top right corner of the Workflow Editor.

  9. The Job Switcher stage will activate when the Opening becomes inactive by a user manually making the Opening inactive or the Opening automatically becoming inactive when a Hiring Goal is met. Learn more about Hiring Goals by reviewing this article.

Best Practice:

Fountain recommends previewing your hiring Opening from the applicant’s perspective to ensure the Job Switcher stage is working correctly. Be sure the Opening is inactive before previewing to make sure the Job Switcher stage activates.

Important Note:

If the Opening is active and applicants are still not seeing the Opening, go to the Job Details screen, click Advanced Settings to expand, and then confirm the box to the left of Hiring opening is checked.

Best Practices

  1. Use this stage to ensure qualified candidates flow to the Openings that need more applicants.

  2. Be aware of which of your Openings are active vs. inactive, as this is directly connected to activating the Job Switcher stage. If you do not have any active Openings, your applicant may become stuck in a Job Switcher stage.

  3. Leverage Hiring Goals to help manage when Openings become active vs. inactive. See Hiring Goals in the Help Center for more information.
